Abstract

Between 8 March 2010 and 9 July 2010, Brockington and Associates (Brockington) conducted intensive cultural resources survey of 7,534 acres within the US Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District. These survey tracts include 1,168 acres at two different reservoirs in east Alabama, 676 acres at two different reservoirs in north Georgia, 2,063 acres at one reservoir in west Georgia, and 3,627 acres at a wildlife mitigation area in northeast Mississippi. This project was conducted under Contract No. W912P9-09-D-0537 with the US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (Corps) as part of an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) program enacted by Congress in 2009. The primary goals of this investigation are to identify and document all previously unrecorded archaeological and historical resources within Corps property boundaries and assess eligibility for inclusion of encountered resources on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) according to the criteria set forth by 36 CFR Part 60. The focus of all work under this contract was compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) on Corps fee-title land, and was therefore not subject to State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) review. Accordingly, standardized report guidelines that meet the Secretary of the Interior's "Professional Qualifications Standards" (48 FR 44738-9) were developed and followed in the preparation of this report. Wherever possible, specific guidelines issued by the SHPO, and under the direction of Mobile District Corps archaeologists, were also followed. Survey methods adhered to both state and federal standards for intensive cultural resources survey. This technical report is divided into three volumes. Volumes I and II summarize the findings from background research and intensive cultural resources survey at the Canal Section of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Wildlife Mitigation Area in Mississippi and Mobile District Corps lakes in Alabama. The current volume summarizes the findings from background research and intensive cultural resources survey of three Mobile District Corps lakes in Georgia. The Georgia survey tracts include 345 acres at Carters Lake in Gilmer County, 331 acres at Lake Lanier in Hall and Lumpkin counties, and 1,858 acres at West Point Lake in Troup and Heard counties. Courtesy copies of this volume will be provided to the SHPO and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources- Historic Preservation Division (HPD).
