Abstract

On 12 July 1996 Dave Davis of this office conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of two areas chosen within the Northwest Georgia Branch Experiment Station, Gordon County, Georgia for placement of two proposed buildings. The proposed buildings include a 100 foot by 50 foot hay barn to be constructed on-site and a 50 foot by 60 foot existing house slated to be moved from across the street from the Branch Office in Calhoun, Georgia to within the Experiment Station venue. The two surveyed locations are situated within a plowed field on the central portion of a bluff located in the northern portion of the Experiment Station (see attached Map #1). Davis was assisted in locating the project area by Mr. Philip Worley, Superintendent of the Experiment Station. The purpose of the survey was to assess any archaeological resources in the area which may be adversely impacted by the proposed development. Survey methods included the employment of a surface inspection of the plowed field and shovel testing. Shovel tests, 40 centimeters wide and dug to subsoil, were conducted every 10 meters. All shovel tests were screened through 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Soil stratigraphy was consistent in the two project areas and will be discussed in each of the following headings.
