Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., has completed a cultural resources survey of 1,095 acres of timber stands and 5.89 miles of Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trails for the Fiscal Year 2015 projects on the Chattooga River District of the Chattahoochee National Forest, in Rabun, Habersham, and Stephens County, Georgia. These projects include the War Woman Timber Sale, the Davidson Creek Timber Sale, the Stonewall Creek Timber Sale, and the Locust Creek OHV Trails Project. The goal of this cultural resources survey was to identify all potentially significant archaeological and historical resources within the project area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Fieldwork for this project was conducted from March-June, 2014. No extant structures are located anywhere within the current project area. During the cultural resources survey, we revisited three previously recorded sites (9RA71, 9RA322, and 9RA323), identified 14 new sites (9RA444 through 9RA455, 9HM307, and 9ST350), and identified five isolated finds (IF1 through IF5). For a detailed list of the sites and Isolated Finds, see tables 1 and 2. We recommend that one site (9RA450) is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and one site (9RA322) is undetermined for the NRHP. The remaining 15 sites do not appear to be eligible for listing on the NRHP.
