Abstract

This report concerns an archeological survey of a portion of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Charlton and Ware Counties, Georgia. The survey was conducted under Federal Activities Act Permit 80-GA-026. Funding was derived from an NSF Grant to the Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.

Purpose of "the research project was to evaluate the feasibility of using archaeological site distribution to determine the age of geological features in the swamp. Similar work on the Georgia coast was extremely successful (DePratter 1979: DePratter and Howard 1977).

Field work within the refuge was originally scheduled to begin Jan. 2, 1980, but delays in the permit procedure delayed work within NWR boundaries until April 1,1980. January, February, and March were therefore, spent working alone Okefenokee swamp margins on private land in Clinch County.
