Abstract

From September 1986 through April of 1987, Robert S. Webb conducted a reconnaissance level cultural resource survey of 4698 acres in eight compartments (105, 106, 107, 115, 134, 144 and 162) of the Oconee National Forest -in Jasper and Putnam Counties. Georgia. The survey was conducted for the USDA -Forest Service and will be Used to expand the existing forest resource data base and facilitate compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-655: 80 STAT.915*, 16 U.S.C. 470). A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed that four previously recorded prehistoric sites (GA08194. -95. -96 and -97) are located within the survey area (Willingham and Wynn 1985). Three of these sites were relocated and discussed in this report. Surface Survey and shovel testing (aided by land acquisition records and map research) revealed 118 sites and 55 isolated finds ranging from Archaic period lithics to early 20th century house sites. It is recommended that 27 sites be protected and/or investigated in more detail. Cultural clearance is recommended for the remaining sites. Wells associated with 18 historic sites should be fenced, camped or filled to reduce hazards and protect any possibly Valuable Cultural data they may contain.
