Abstract

In November 2011 volunteers joined Forest Service archaeologists in work at the Scull Shoals Factory designed to clean the 1840s brick bridge. The Scull Shoals Historic Area (9GE2349) is located on the Oconee Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests in Greene County, Georgia. This bridge is believed to date to the 1840s, when new brick factory buildings were constructed after a fire. Volunteers removed a fence constructed in the 1960s or 1970s and removed vegetation that had grown on the bridge. During the course of this work, it was discovered that brick walls were present that had been previously unknown. Subsequent archaeological investigations revealed that the bridge and factory building were physically connected. As a result of this work we now have a better understanding of the factory and have enhanced the visitor experience.
