Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Survey for the proposed Interstate 85/Poplar Road interchange in Coweta County, Georgia. The work for this survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (36 CFR 800), and was intended to determine the presence of significant archaeological resources in the project's area of potential effect (APE) and expanded survey corridor (ESC). The project involves construction of a new diamond interchange and right-of-way (ROW) expansion along I-85, Poplar Road, Newnan Crossing, and Newnan Crossing Bypass. The total length of ROW surveyed was 22,851 feet (6,965 m). In accordance with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) guidelines, New South Associates surveyed the ESC, which represents an additional 100-foot width beyond each side of the APE. One previously recorded site (9CW306), two new archaeological sites (9CW428 and 9CW429), and two isolated finds (IFs 1 and 2) were identified within the surveyed area. The portions of the sites in the APE and ESC do not have archaeological research potential and, therefore, would not contribute to any significance the sites might have. No further work is necessary to satisfy Section 106 requirements and the planned undertaking may proceed.
