Abstract

Archeological investigations were carried out at two sites located within the Big Lazer Creek Wildlife Management Area that were previously recommended eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places at a local level of significance. The effects of proposed lake construction were mitigated at the sites through data recovery. The significant information recovered from WGC 1564 consists of determination its Late Archaic Period temporal provenience, its use as a short-term quartzite procurement and manufacturing station, and its geographic location. The significant information recovered from WGC 1565 consists of a map of its form, a stratigraphic record of its construction details, and its geographic location. As the significant archaeological information has been recovered from WGC 1564 and WGC 1565, it is recommended that the sites are no longer eligible for -inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and that construction of the proposed lake should proceed without further consideration of the sites.
