Abstract

In 2002, Prentice Thomas and Associates, Inc. was awarded Contract No. C5890020159 to provide test and evaluation services to support the cultural resources management program at Fort Stewart Military Reservation and Hunter Army Airfield. The contract is administered by the National Park Service, Southeast Archeological Center, with funds provided by Fort Stewart, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Branch. The third delivery order was issued in May of 2004, calling for the testing of 11 sites in Bryan and Liberty counties, Georgia. The sites are 9EV249, 9EV291, 9EV294, 9EV295, 9EV312, 9EV321, 9LI617, 9LI619, 9LI643, 9LIl190, and 9LI1249. The DO-3 sites were tested through a combination of field approaches, which included reconnaissance, surface collection, and test pit excavation. Historic research was undertaken at those sites for which this effort was tasked. As a group, the entire testing sample produced information that is useful for the interpretation of Late Archaic to Irene phases in prehistory. The historic components range from the early eighteenth century deposits at 9EV321 to the time of government acquisition. Three sites are recommended as eligible for nomination to the NRHP: 9EV249, 9EV321, and 9LI1190. 9EV249 is the historic homestead of Milton Glisson, and contains considerable structural evidence. 9EV321 contains Deptford and St. Catherines/Savannah components, along with minor quantities of St. Simons, Wilmington, and Irene materials. This site is noteworthy because it also produced an unexpected discovery, an eighteenth century component that was formerly unknown. 9LI1190 appears to be the Jinks Fabian homestead, an African-American family; the suggested date range is 1880 to 1940. The remaining eight sites are ineligible for NRHP nomination.
