Abstract

In March of 1978, the University of Florida was asked by Hampton Plantation Inc. to undertake a preliminary survey and reconnaissance of Butler Point, St. Simons Island, Georgia. Wishing to develop this 546 acre parcel of land into a housing subdivision, Hampton Plantation Inc. desired an archaeological survey to determine the nature and significance of all sites on the property. Particular attention was to be paid to the known ruins of the Butler Plantation which was occupied from 1791 to 1871.

The field survey began on March 27th and ended on May 19th, 1978. All 546 acres of Butler Point were covered during the survey and all of the historic ruins located were mapped. Work began on the road alignment as these were already in the process of being developed. This report contains a preliminary discussion of the road survey.
