Construction of the Darien Sewer System will impact cultural resources identified during recent archaeological surveys of Darien (WAR, 1984; Seabury and Garrow, 1978). In order tb satisfy federal and state requirements concerning nonrenewable cultural resources (Executive Order 11593, National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and the Archaeological and Historical Preservation Act of 1974), mitigation of project impacts will be necessary. The following ·sections present a proposal by Water and Air Research, Inc. (WAR) to conduct the necessary archaeological and historical studies prior to construction ?f the sewer system. This proposal is designed to conduct the studies in an efficient and expeditious manner based on a sound research de~ign which will maximize data recovery. The Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has indicated that Darien is one of the most sensitive areas of the state in terms of archaeological and historic sites. The recent sewer system survey confirms this belief. Out of 38,400 feet of lines surveyed, 17,170 feet, or 44.7 percent, produced archaeological materials. The locations which contained archaeological material were then assessed in terms of their research potential or significance (36CFR60.6) in order to make recommendations for additional testing. Although seven areas were identified as containing archaeological sites, only six areas (a total of 8,200 feet of line or 21.4 percent of surveyed lines) merit further study (Table 1-1).
