Abstract

An intensive Phase I Archaeological Survey was conducted of the proposed Harmony Senior Living Community project located on the comer of SR 92/McIntosh Road and Cowan Road in Griffin, Georgia. (Fig. 1). The study was conducted in order to locate and identify cultural resources and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria [36CFR Part 60.4 (a-d)]. This project was conducted to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, using Section 106 Regulations 36 CFR Part 800 for guidance in the implementation thereof. The field survey and report were implemented using the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists Standards and Guidelines for Archaeological Surveys (2014). The Phase I survey included a literature review and intensive field survey. During the literature review, state and county records, maps, and documents were examined to determine if previously recorded cultural resources were located within or around the project area. The field survey was conducted using surface and subsurface techniques to locate and identify archeological resources within the study area. The area of potential effects (APE) for direct effects is defined as a 9.04-acre tract of land located on the comer of SR 92/Mclntosh Road and Cowan Road in Griffin, Georgia. A 1-acre permanent easement and a .55-acre temporary easement was also assessed (appendix A).
