Phase II Investigations of 13 Sites (9CE80, 9CE132, 9CE170, 9CE271, 9CE668, 9CE1575, 9CE1576, 9CE1579, 9CE1870, 9CE1871, 9CE1872, 9CE1873, and 9CE1875) in Training Areas A, AA, and D and Salvage Archaeology at Site 9CE2611 on Main Post, Fort Benning Milit

Under a continuing services contract with the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted a series of Phase II archaeological investigations at 13 sites within the reservation plus a salvage operation at one site that became necessary following the inadvertent discovery of human remains. The objective of this testing was to evaluate each site to determine its eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and to make recommendations for future archaeological investigations. All work was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended; Executive Order 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment); and the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974.     A total of 14 sites (9CE80, 9CE132, 9CE170, 9CE271, 9CE668, 9CE1575, 9CE1576, 9CE1579, 9CE1870, 9CE1871, 9CE1872, 9CE1873, 9CE1875, and 9CE2611) were investigated during the project. Multiple components were recorded during the investigation ranging from Late Archaic to the twentieth century.     Six of the sites (9ce80, 9ce132, 9ce170, 9CE1576, 9CE1870, and 9Ce2611) are recommended as eligible for inclusion into the NRHP. Site 9CE170, along with other small sites, was combined with Site 9CE1870 in 2001 to create one large site now known as 9CE1870 (Elliott et al. 2001). Shovel testing at Site 9CE132 resulted in the inclusion of two other nearby sites (9CE250 and 9CE253) into one larger site now known as 9CE132. These sites have intact features, stratigraphic integrity, and/or will enhance the cultural history of the region. Each of these sites need protective measures taken so further disturbances will not impact their integrity. This is especially true in the case of Site 9CE2611, which contains human remains.     The remaining eight sites (9CE271, 9CE668, 9CE1575, 9CE1579, 9CE1871, 9CE1872, 9CE1873, and 9CE1875) are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and require no further archaeological investigations. These sites have been destroyed or heavily disturbed by previous land use and natural activities and/or possess scant cultural material or information.
