Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive Phase I archaeological resources survey at the proposed expansion of the Mohawk Industrial Site between 2- 5, and 12 August 2004, in Gordon County, Georgia. These investigations were carried out for the City of Calhoun in partial fulfillment of guidelines established by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) program, by personnel qualified under 36 CFRPart 61. The project tract covers approximately 47.3 ha (117 acres) west of Interstate Route 75, east of U.S. Route 41, and south of Union Grove Road near Calhoun, Georgia.     Background research at the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) at the University of Georgia, Athens, found one previously recorded archaeological resources within the project tract and 15 within a 1.6 km (1 mi) radius of the project tract. One of these resources, site 9G0242, is located within an area of direct or indirect effect. However, this resource has been recommended ineligible for the NRHP. The other 15 previously recorded resources are not located within an area of direct or indirect effect for the construction of the proposed industrial development.     Phase I cultural resources survey consisted of screened shovel tests at 30-meter (1 00 ft) intervals. A visual inspection of all exposed ground surfaces was also conducted. Three previously unrecorded archaeological sites were identified during the field survey. All of these sites are recommended ineligible and have reached their maximum research potential during this Phase I investigation. No significant cultural resources will be impacted by the proposed development and cultural resources clearance is recommended.
