Abstract

In April of 2012, Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an archeological survey of 3 7 acres of a proposed residential development known as Lull water at Riverwood Plantation, in Columbia County, Georgia. Federal funding may be used in the construction of apartments on the property, so the survey was conducted in order to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The field survey included visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces and the excavation of 59 shovel tests in wooded areas. As a result, two previously undocumented archeological sites and an artifact occurrence were discovered. One of the sites produced mid‑ to late nineteenth century artifacts, and the other yielded undiagnostic prehistoric quartz debris. The two sites are recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places due to their poor integrity and lack of research potential. The proposed development will have no effect to any significant archeological sites.
