Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological survey of approximately 30 miles of the existing North Dublin-Eastman 230 kV transmission line corridor in Dodge and Laurens counties, Georgia. This corridor begins at the North Dublin substation at County Road 462/Louis Parker Road in Laurens County, and runs roughly southwest to the Eastman substation at Georgia Highway 117 in Dodge County.

Thirty archaeological sites (9DG137 through 9DG139 and 9LS289 through 9LS315) and eight isolated finds were identified within the APE. Current information was not sufficient to determine the nature and NRHP eligibility of 16 archaeological sites (9DG138, 9LS290, 2LS294-9LS296, 9LS298, 9LS299, 9LS301, 9LS303-9LS309, and 9LS315) identified during the current investigation. These sites should be avoided and protected from earthmoving activities associated with the proposed transmission line maintenance activities. Vehicular traffic across these sites should be permitted in dry weather. However, care should be taken not to move heavy equipment across these sites during periods of wet weather, which could cause deep ruts and damage the integrity of the site. If this strategy of avoidance and protection is not feasible for any or all of these sites, then additional archaeological investigations should be undertaken to definitely determine the nature and NRHP eligibility of the portions of the affected site(s) located within the transmission line corridor.

The remaining 14 archaeological sites and the eight isolated finds do not merit further management consideration.
