Abstract

During December 2014, Cardno conducted a cultural resource Phase I survey of a proposed lease area at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport in Glynn County, Georgia. The project area is defined as the parcel labeled ATract 6@ on the map titled ALease Parcel for: Gulfstream Amendment 3, Brunswick Golden Isles Airport,@ as modified December 18, 2014, provided by Brown and Caldwell. The project for improvement of Tract 6 is to replace the existing Quonset hut with a new storage building of the same size and to add a training facility of about 3,500 square feet to the side of the new storage building.

The purpose of the investigation was to locate, identify, and evaluate any cultural resources in the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking. An APE is defined as Athe geographic area or areas within which an undertaking may directly or indirectly cause changes in the character or use of historic properties, if any such properties exist@ (36 CFR Part 800.16[d]).

During the Phase I survey, no archaeological resources were identified. One historic structure over 50 years old, a Quonset hut, is located in Tract 6. This structure was mapped using GPS, measured, and photographed. Cardno recommends that this Quonset hut be considered not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
