Abstract

This project is within the City of Alpharetta, Fulton County, and consists of the widening and reconstruction of SR 9, reconfiguration of sideroads, pedestrian improvements and signal upgrades. The work is divided into two projects, PI 721790 and 721780. The first project, PI 721790, begins at Upper Hembree Road and continues to Academy Street; PI 721780 stretches from Academy Street to Windward Parkway. SR 9 is a non-uniform arterial, having several different sections along the 3.64 mile corridor. There are generally four different existing sections along SR 9 within the project limit: a fivelane section with flush median, a four-lane section, a three-lane section with flush median, and a two-lane section. The existing right of way varies from 80 to 110 feet throughout the project, but is generally 80 or 90 feet wide for most of the project length. The proposed section is a four-lane section with a 20-foot raised median, two 12-foot travellanes,16-foot shoulders with curb and gutter, a 5-foot sidewalk and a 100-foot of right of way width for most of the project length.

Auxiliary lanes would be added as needed and would increase the required right of way. In sensitive areas, the raised median may be reduced from 20 feet to 8 feet, the lanes narrowed from 12 feet to 11 feet and the shoulders reduced from 16 feet to 12 feet. This would reduce the required right of way to approximately 76 feet in these areas. Additional permanent and/or temporary easements beyond the required right of way line are expected, but will be kept to a minimum. The proposed section may not necessarily be widened symmetrically from the existing roadway centerline.
