Abstract

This report is a summary of what is currently known about an abandoned cemetery in Deepstep, Georgia (see Figure 1 for location). The cemetery is on property that will be mined for kaolin by the Thiele Kaolin Company. Several local residents notified Thiele of the graveyard's presence but there was no surface indication of burials because the tract has been farmed for many years. Fieldwork carried out between June 26-27, 1989 confirmed the presence of at least 36 burials on the property. The investigation was conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., an Athens based consulting firm specializing in archeological surveys and excavations.
