Abstract

Purchase Order Number 849-Ga-SCS-76 was awarded to Marvin T. Smith representing the Cobb-Fulton Archaeological Survey to furnish archaeological and historical investigations and survey reports for the Soque Watershed, located in Habersham County, Georgia. The area to be investigated included five flood water retarding structures, one channel excavation of the Soque River, and one multiple purpose structure (Flood retention and recreation). These projects were divided into three phases. This report deals with Phase I: flood retention dam sites 42 and 36. Dam Site 42 consisted of a primary impact area of 34 acres and a secondary impact area of 25 acres, while Dam Site 36 consisted of a primary impact area of 75 acres and a secondary impact area of 50 acres. Investigations began by reviewing previous research on Habersham County. Cyrus Thomas in the Catalogue of Prehistoric Works vast of the Rocky Mountains (1891) listed 19 prehistoric works in Habersham. County. Although locations were vague, none of these works appeared to be in the Project areas. Robert Wauchope's Archaeological Survey of Northern Georgia (1966) listed four archaeological sites in Habersham County, but none were in the Phase I areas. Finally, the site files maintained by the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia and the files of the Office of the State Archaeologist. Georgia Department of Natural Resources were consulted. No known archaeological sites were in the Dam Site 42 or Dam Site 36 areas.
