Abstract

The proposed project involves constructing a 1-lane roundabout at the existing 4-legged, two-way stop controlled intersection at SR16 and Old 85 Connector/Hollonville Road in Spalding County. The layout was revised and shifted in the northeast direction due to new commercial development in the southwest quadrant, and an existing gas station in the southeast quadrant. All 4- approaches consists of the same basic layout, widening existing lanes (of varying widths) to an average width of 19.5-ft at the entrance of a 150-ft diameter inscribed circle. The proposed inscribed circle contains a 20-ft wide circulatory roadway, a 14-ft wide truck apron (formerly proposed to be 18-ft wide), and an 82-ft wide landscaped central island (formerly 74-ft wide). Additionally, all approaches will have splitter islands with cross walks, 12-foot urban shoulders containing sidewalk around the circulatory roadway, lighting, and the construction of a retaining wall along the southwest radius of the roundabout. There are also easements needed for the construction and maintenance of slopes and utilities as well as driveways; the maximum width of these easements is 20 feet.
