Abstract

The Heritage Program of the United States Forest Service is tasked with managing the cultural resources located on National Forest lands. In order to better manage the exceptional examples of cultural resources, the agency established the category of Priority Heritage Assets (PHAs). Priority Heritage Assets are cultural resource sites of distinct public value that are, or should be, actively maintained. These are the resources that are unique, special, or have had a significant investment of public funds. PHAs are required to have management plans that document: 1) The existing resource condition; 2) Management goals, objectives, and desired future condition; 3) Maintenance standards and guidelines; 4) Needed actions; 5) Proposed budget (if applicable); and 6) Timeframes and schedules as appropriate. A total of 18 sites have been designated PHAs on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. The present report is divided into two sections. The first will address broad management goals, objectives, and desired future condition for these sites as a class, as well as condition standards and guidelines. Following this, each of the eighteen sites is discussed separately below, with those on the Chattahoochee discussed first, followed by those on the Oconee.
