Abstract

During May and June, 1989, Robert S. Webb, Beth Gantt, Sterling Howard and Thomas Pickett conducted evaluative testing at 5 prehistoric sites in Newton and Walton Counties, Georgia. The testing program was implemented to determine the National Register eligibility status of each site and provide the information needed to make determinations of effect. These determinations are required as part of the Corps of Engineers 404 permitting process. The permit dictates compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470) as amended. Testing revealed that 3 of the sites (NRW-1-6, 12 and 17) retain enough significant information to be considered eligible for the National Register. These sites will be adversely affected by the proposed reservoir project and data recovery is recommended to negate the effects. The remaining 2 sites (NRW-1-3 and 4) are considered ineligible for the National Register. They will not be adversely affected and no further work is recommended.
