Abstract

Upon request to conduct a survey of the school for possible future expansion and the addition of two buildings to the southern side of the present school, the Archaeologist began her planning prior to the field work. The G.S.U. site files were consulted and while there are no National Register Sites in the vicinity of the project, a small hilltop lithic site had been recorded on the Niskey Lake area (9 Fu 23). The material collected was a few quartzite tools and chips. This sort of site is very common in the Piedmont area and was initially predicted to be the type of site that would be found at the project, if any. On a previous survey in the area, the Archaeologist had noted some outcrops which looked like they might be steatite. Quarried Steatite outcrops were the other type of site predicted for the project. The project area was plotted on the Ben Hill U.S.G.S. topographic map prior to the actual survey.
