Abstract

A Phase I archeological survey of the proposed Quitman Industrial Park in Brooks County, Georgia was conducted to locate and identify archeological resources within the project area and assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36 CFR Part 60.4). The project area consists of a 10 1-hectare tract adjacent to the south city limits of Quitman, Georgia. Four archeological sites (9B042 through 9B045) and four isolated finds (IF-1, IF-2, IF-3, and IF-4) were recorded during the field survey. Site 9B042 is a late 191h-early 20th century artifact scatter. Sites 9B043 and 9B044 are scatters containing both late 191h to early 20th century artifacts and non-diagnostic prehistoric lithic artifacts. Site 9B045 is a late 19th to early 20th century house site. IF -1 is an eroded prehistoric sherd datable only to the Woodland or Mississippian period. IF-2, IF-3 and IF-4 each consist of a single piece of Coastal Plain chert debitage. One other resource, the Georgia & Florida Railway corridor, is located within the project area. This railway corridor is more than 50 years old and the line is still in active service. All of the archeological sites and isolated finds located during the survey and the section of the Georgia & Florida Railway corridor traversing the project area are recommended ineligible for the NRHP.
