Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey was conducted for the proposed Eden wood development tract in Paulding County, Georgia, to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area, and to assess the significance of each resource. The proposed project includes a 205-hectare (506-acre) tract, south of Pumpkinvine Creek in northeastern Paulding County. Eighteen archeological sites, one cemetery, a house complex (within an archeological site), and four isolated finds were found within the project area during the survey.

Prehistoric resources recorded during the current study include occupations dating to the Middle Woodland, Woodland/Mississippian, Early Mississippian, and Late Mississippian periods. The historic archeological sites and resources date from the 19th through middle 20th century.

Based on Phase I survey data, 14 sites, one structure complex, and four isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. One prehistoric site (9PA439) is recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP and will be preserved. Site 9P A420 is a rockshelter having an unknown NRHP eligibility status; this site will also be preserved.  Site 9P A417, Starnes-Ruff Cemetery, is potentially eligible for the NRHP and will be preserved.

Two prehistoric sites were investigated at the Phase II level. Based on Phase I/11 investigations, one site (9P A419) is recommended eligible for the NRHP and one site (9P A436) is recommended ineligible for the NRHP.
