Abstract

From late September to early November 2014, Atkins conducted a Phase I cultural resources assessment of the approximately 2,000 acre Heart of Georgia Mega Site (HGMS) project tract in Laurens County, Georgia. The project tract is in planted pine with several finger drainages crossing the area. A transmission line corridor traverses the northern section of the project tract. A number of two-track trails off of J. W. Warren Road and a red clay road, Georgia Kraft Road, provided access to all areas of the project tract. Fieldwork was conducted by Atkins Senior Archaeologist Frank Keel and staff archaeologists Gerald Brinkley and Benjie Cook. Four previously unrecorded archaeological sites (9LS338-9LS341) were located and evaluated during the assessment. These sites are determined to be ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D (36 CFR Part 800.4). Thirteen previously recorded archaeological sites (9LS317-9LS329) have been recorded on the project tract. The recorders of the sites, New South Associates, determined these sites to ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D (36 CFR Part 800.4). Atkins concurs with this determination. Based on the results of our assessment, it is our opinion that the development of the Heart of Georgia Mega Site will have no effect on historic resources listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
