Abstract

In May of 2002, Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of a proposed Industrial Park in Towns County, Georgia and Clay County, North Carolina on behalf of the Towns County Commissioner's Office (Figure 1 ). The Towns County portion of the project area comprises 39 acres, while the North Carolina portion is 9 acres. The project area is located on the Hiawassee, GA/NC USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle, approximately five miles northwest of Hiawassee, Georgia, three miles north/northeast of Young Harris, Georgia, and five miles south of Hayesville, North Carolina. The area of potential effects (APE) for this project is defined by the project area boundary, which is shown in Figure 1. The purpose of the investigation was to identify archeological and historical resources within the project area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Under direction of Principal Investigator Grace Keith, one archaeological site was recorded during the survey. The site is recommended ineligible for listing in the NRHP. This report is organized in the following manner: Chapter II contains a review of the environmental and cultural background for the study area; Chapter Ill details the field and laboratory methods used during the investigation; and Chapter IV outlines the results and recommendations of the study. A complete list of references cited in the text follows. The archaeological site form for 9To212 and the resume of the Principal Investigator are found in the appendix.
