Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted along Oglethorpe Power Corporation's proposed 21 mi (34 km) Douglas-Wilsonville transmission line and Wilsonville substation. As a result, ten previously unrecorded prehistoric and historic archeological sites were recorded, three isolated artifacts were found, and four historic structures were documented along the proposed right-of-way. A previously recorded prehistoric site was also was located along the corridor. An evaluation of the cultural resources indicates that one of the newly discovered sites, given the temporary site number 9Cf (SAS)6, and the previously recorded site, 9Cf 1 00 , are potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Transmission line construction will not disturb 9Cf100, but could adversely affect 9Cf(SAS)6, unless special precautions are followed. Hand clearing vegetation, reseeding to prevent erosion, and spanning the site with power poles are recommended to mitigate potential construction - related impacts to this site. None of the four standing structures appear to be architecturally significant, and the transmission line will not constitute a visual impact.
