Abstract

Greenhouse Consultants incorporated was retained by QORE Property Sciences to provide a cultural resources survey and archaeological testing of the proposed Rocky Plains SST tower site near Covington, Newton County, Georgia. The survey fieldwork was completed November 23, 2001, by Stephen A. Hammack, Senior Staff Archaeologist. John W. Matthews served as Principal Investigator on this project. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the location proposed for this tower revealed the presence of prehistoric or historic cultural resources that would indicate previous occupation. The investigation was completed to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act for Federal-involvement (FCC) projects. An archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed project area was undertaken, as was a general surface search within the area of direct project impacts. This cultural resources investigation included the study of an Area of Potential Effect (APE) to determine impacts on historical resources. An APE of one mile was selected based upon site topography and the height of the proposed tower. Photographs were taken of any historic, structures and/ or cemeteries, as were photographs taken from these resources toward the tower location to aid in determining potential impacts.
