Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey for the Galilee Church Road improvements in Jackson County, Georgia, under subcontract to Moreland Altobelli Associates, Inc. The project corridor consists of an approximately 1,200 foot (365.75 m) long section along Galilee Church Road where it intersects with the Middle Oconee River. The existing corridor right-of-way width is 80 feet (24.3 m). Fieldwork consisted of a pedestrian walkover of the corridor and shovel testing of two transects along each side of the right-of-way.

The project area was designated as the proposed length and the existing right-of-way of the corridor. The area of potential affect (APE) was defined as the project area as well as an additional 100-foot (30.5 m) width beyond each side of the identified project area as required by the April 2008 revised GDOT Environmental Procedures Manual. The survey resulted in the location of one isolated find and one newly recorded site, 9JK273. This site (Old Bridge Site) consists of the remains of a historic bridge that originally crossed the river west of the current bridge location.

The site was defined and assessed for National Register of Historic Places (NHRP) eligibility. New South Associates recommends that Site 9JK273 is not eligible for listing on the NRHP, and no further work is recommended for this site and project.
