Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRZLB-25(6) in Brantley County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. GDOT project BRZLB-25(6) in Brantley County consists of the replacement of a narrow and substandard bridge on CR 191 over the South Prong of Big Creek. The project was originally surveyed for archaeology in 1999, and since that time the length of the project has been increased and the width of the project has decreased. While the original survey extended 150 feet beyond the ends of the bridge, the project now extends 375 feet west of the bridge and 450 feet east of the bridge. Also, while the original survey covered the area up to 150 feet beyond existing right-of-way, the project is now proposing to add only 30 feet of additional right-of-way on each side of CR 191 (60 feet total of required right-of-way). The project length is 1000 feet (0.19 mile). The current survey covered all areas east and west of the bridge that were not covered by the original survey.

An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource· Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
