The proposed project would consist of the construction of a new interchange approximately 400 feet west of the existing intersection of SR 72 and SR 17 northwest of Elberton. The interchange would consist of four ramps, three of which would be loops. Throughout the interchange, SR 72 and SR 17 would be widened to four lanes. Existing and required rights-of-way are variable. Changes in the proposed project include the removal of one ramp in the southwest quadrant, and the addition of minor amounts of right-of-way at various locations throughout the project corridor. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor.
