Abstract

From May through September 1989, Webb Diversified Consulting conducted a reconnaissance level cultural resource survey of 3,213 acres in nine compartments (131, 140, 141, 150, 151, 173, 183, 186, and 192) of the Oconee National Forest in Jones, Jasper, Putnam and Greene Counties, Georgia. The survey was conducted for the USDA-Forest Service and will be used to expand the existing forest resource data base and facilitate compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-655; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470). A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed that three previously recorded prehistoric sites (9Ge52, 9Pm96, and 9Pm98) are located within the survey area. One of these sites was relocated and is discussed in this report. Surface survey and shovel testing (aided by land acquisition records and map research) revealed 93 sites, 18 rock piles, and 51 isolated finds ranging from Archaic period lithic scatters to early 20th century house sites. It is recommended that 29 sites be protected and/or investigates in more detail. The four cemeteries that were located should be protected, fenced and monitored. Cultural clearance is recommended for the remaining sites. Wells associated with 6 historic sites should be fenced, capped or filled to reduce hazards and protect any possibly valuable cultural data they may contain.
