Archeological Survey of Two Bridge Replacements: SR 44 over Kettle Creek and Fishing Creek, Wilkes County, Georgia

Report Number

Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to replace two structurally deficient bridges on State Route 44 (SR 44) in Wilkes County (Figure 1 ). One of these bridges spans Fishing Creek northeast of the town of Washington. The other spans Kettle Creek southwest of Washington. Both will be replaced in existing locations and traffic will be re-routed on-site. Southeastern Archeological Services (SAS) conducted an intensive archeological survey of the project areas to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. This act stipulates that federal agencies--in this case the Federal Highway Administration--take into account an undertaking's potential adverse effects to significant cultural resources. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe, and evaluate (in terms of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places) archeological sites in the project's area of potential effect. The field survey was conducted on August 8, 2001 by staff archeologists Ron Schoettmer and Trent Meyers.
