Abstract

Project: FF-165-1(1), Fulton County; Clearinghouse Doc. No. 76-11-02-02.

Location: This project involves the widening of the Crossville/ Woodstock road from Alpharetta Road in Roswell to Sandy Plains Road near Mountain Park. The present 2 laned facility will be widened to 4 lanes with an additional 20 to 60 feet of right-of-way needed.

Method of Survey

1. Planning: The site files at Georgia State University had no sites recorded in the vicinity of the project. The project was plotted on the Roswell and Mountain Park U.S.G.S. quad sheets. There are three minor drainages (see map) which were marked for closer examination.

2. Field Work: The project is on an area of upper middle class low density housing with some small farms. With few exceptions the land adjacent to the road must have been graded during construction of the housing. Areas not likely to have been graded were mostly under pasture or woods, however, there were some garden plots and small cultivated fields. These were checked with no evidence of archaeological material found. The drainage areas proved to have little floodplain and while each had fields close by as stated above, no sites were located.

3. Sub-Surface Tests: None were indicated.

Results: No sites were discovered in the project area. Prior to the field work, the project was not felt to be in a high site probability area. Examination of the fields along the project confirmed this impression as did the land use pattern. In my opinion the archaeological resources of the State will not be affected by construction.
