Archaeological Assessment of Projects IR-185-1(309) and (310), Muscogee County

Report Number

Year of Publication

Abstract

The proposed projects would widen and reconstruct the existing 40 foot median of State Route 411/I-185 from St. Marys Road northerly to Buena Vista Road, and from Buena Vista Road northerly to Macon Road for a total distance of approximately 2.5 miles. The existing right-of-way is approximately 300 feet. No additional right-of-way is required. An archaeological survey consistent with the project descriptions was conducted for the entire length of the projects' corridor.

An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with ''GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the projects' area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the projects will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the projects conform to that described above.
