Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The proposed undertaking would include a proposed approximate 65-foot by 65-foot (20-meter by 20-meter) lease area that would include a 160-foot overall height monopole telecommunications structure and associated ground-level equipment. The subject site is located at 6492 Blythe Island Hwy, Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia. This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. During our database research, we found eighteen previously recorded archaeological sites (9GN144, 9GN145, 9GN146, 9GN147, 9GN148, 9GN149, 9GN150, 9GN151, 9GN152, 9GN153, 9GN157, 9GN158, 9GN159, 9GN160, 9GN161, 9GN162, 9GN163, and 9GN164) and four survey reports (95, 218, 6276, and 6277) within our standard 1- mile background research radius. A large portion of Blythe Island has been previously surveyed (218) including the entire proposed project area. Although survey 218 identified several archaeological sites, none of the sites were identified within our project’s APE for direct effects. During the course of the field survey portion of this archaeological assessment, no archaeological cultural resources were encountered. We conclude that the undertaking would not affect any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the proposed undertaking at the project site.
