Abstract

During November 1988 and January 1989, Robert S. Webb and Keith McRae conducted an intensive coverage cultural resource survey of approximately 89 hectares (220 acres) in Upson County, Georgia for Mayes, Sudderth & Etheredge, Inc. The project area is being considered as the site for the Upson County airport. Since federal funds are being used and FAA permitting is required, compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470) as amended, is necessary. This act is the regulatory basis for conducting this cultural resources survey. A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed no previously recorded sites within the survey area. A review of historic maps and aerial photographs revealed no pre-1940 structural complexes within the project area. Surface survey and shovel testing resulted in the discovery of 5 prehistoric sites, 3 prehistoric/historic sites and 6 isolated finds. Since all of these resources have been heavily disturbed by agriculture and associated erosion, cultural clearance is recommended.
