Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The subject site includes a proposed 100-foot by 100-foot compound and a proposed approximately 30-foot by 350- foot access traversing in a northeasterly direction from Highway 441 to the compound as shown on Attachment 12b. Grading would be necessary for construction of the proposed telecommunications compound and access. The facility would include a 320-foot guyed- type (330-feet with appurtenances) telecommunications structure and associated ground level support equipment. The facility is located at 3068 Highway 441, near Rentz, Laurens County, Georgia.
This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. Through our review of available cultural records and databases seven recorded archaeological sites and one survey report were found within a 3/4 -mile search radius.
The seven identified archaeological sites have all been determined ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The closest archaeological site (9LS176) is located approximately 1920 feet south of the proposed compound, off of Highway 441. The study corridor for the archaeological survey report covers 27 miles of Highway 441. During the 1994 survey, 57 sites were discovered, including 36 historic components and 27 prehistoric components. Of these, three sites were recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), however, these sites are not located within the ¾ -mile APE for visual effects. During the course of our Phase I intensive field survey segment of this archaeological assessment, no archaeological cultural resources were encountered.
We conclude that the proposed undertaking would have no effect on any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the proposed undertaking.
