Abstract

On June 21, 1989, Robert S. Webb conducted an intensive coverage cultural resources survey of the proposed Lake Arrowhead 115/12 kV substation site in Cherokee County, Georgia. The site covers 3.4 hectares (8.5 acres). The survey was conducted for Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) in compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470) as amended. A review of the state site files, structure files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed no previously recorded cultural resources within the survey area. A review of historic maps and aerial photographs revealed no pre-1940 structures within the proposed corridor. Surface survey and shovel testing resulted in the discovery of 3 prehistoric sites (1 Middle Archaic and 2 unidentifiable lithic scatters). Since all of these resources have been heavily disturbed by agriculture, silviculture, Georgia Power Company (GPC) transmission line impacts and heavy erosion, cultural clearance is recommended.
