Abstract

The proposed project is located on the north side of Dalton in Whitfield County, Georgia. The project would involve intersection improvements to US 41/US 76/SR 3/North Dalton Bypass and SR 71/Cleveland Highway. The proposed project would lengthen the existing left and right turning lanes on all four legs of the intersection for additional vehicle storage and proper deceleration length. The existing northbound SR 71/Cleveland Highway and eastbound US 41/US 76/SR 3/North Dalton Bypass would be reconfigured to include dual left tum lanes. The through lanes would be shifted to allow for the extra interior width needed for the dual left tum lanes. The existing traffic signal would be modified to accommodate the reconfigured intersection.

The existing right-of-way (ROW) width varies between 180 feet and 300 feet on US 41/US 76/ SR 3/North Dalton Bypass. The existing ROW width is approximately 140 feet on SR 71/Cleveland Highway. A strip of required ROW up to 20 feet in width would be required on the south side of US 41/US 76/SR 3/North Dalton Bypass. Miters of ROW would be required in the southeast and southwest intersection quadrants. Temporary easement up to 10 feet in width would be required on the east and west sides of SR 71/Cleveland Highway north and south of the intersection.

The project survey limits extend approximately 700 feet north of the intersection, 700 feet south of the intersection (to include the bridge over the stream), 750 feet east of the intersection, and 900 feet west of the intersection (to include the bridge over the railroad). The total project survey length is approximately 3,050 feet (0.58 mile).
