Abstract

During the time interval from March 8 to March 16, 1976, an archaeological reconnaissance of the proposed Pine Log Tributary Watershed in Gordon County, Georgia, was conducted in area 8, one of 13 proposed reservoirs in the watershed area . During the initial exploratory survey, no historic or prehistoric sites of significance were located. From March until September, 1976, the remaining 12 reservoir areas were surveyed to locate and evaluate the archaeological and historical remains and to determine whether such remains were likely to be destroyed or damaged by construction or by flooding subsequent to construction of the reservoirs. This report is a result of seven months of field surveying and evaluating the data obtained in the Pine Log Tributary Watershed area of Gordon, Bartow, and Cherokee Counties, Georgia.

During the seven- month survey period, several ยท techniques were employed in the field to determine and locate historic and archaeological resources. In some of the areas, the nature of the terrain restricted the types of technique s that could be used for example, in the upper reaches of Pine Log Creek where the river valley is narrow and the flood plain absent, the steep gradient of the hills prevented any test excavations; however, it is most probable that any cultural material recovered on the sides of these hills would represent secondary sites.
