Abstract

The purpose of this Phase I investigation was to determine the presence or absence of prehistoric and historic cultural resources within the approximately 150-acre parcel of the proposed Satilla Landing residential development in Woodbine, Camden County, Georgia by Land Resource Companies, LLC. This archaeological survey will assist in establishing recommendations for further study or avoidance. A notable portion of the property is in wetland areas. The Phase I cultural resource survey was completed in compliance with all known cultural resource guidelines and regulations of the state of Georgia (Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division) and Federal Government (Section 106).

A cultural resources reconnaissance survey of the entire project parcel considered for development was undertaken along with excavation of shovel tests. The project is situated west of the Satilla River, south of Dunn Branch, and north of the existing Woodbine Elementary School (see Figure 1).

No previously recorded archaeological sites are listed within one mile of the project in the University of Georgia state site database. No historic structures or remains were noted in proximity to the project during the survey.

Archaeological survey transects had been cleared throughout the parcel and extended to allow for visual inspection and collection and excavation of shovel tests, as required where ground surface visibility was restricted. Shovel tests were excavated on a thirty meter interval in all undisturbed non-wetland areas. Ground surface visibility ranged from 0 to approximately 10 percent in heavily forested portions of the parcel. Our crew also conducted a surface reconnaissance and limited shovel testing in selected wetland portions of the project tract. All shovel tests were negative and no artifacts or features were discovered.

On the basis of the cultural resource fieldwork completed it is our recommendation that the proposed development be permitted at this location.
