Abstract

An archaeological reconnaissance of the proposed Pine Log Tributary Watershed in Gordon County, Georgia, was conducted at intervals between March 8 and March 16, 1976. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to locate and evaluate archaeological and historical remains in the watershed area and to determine whether such remains were likely to be destroyed or damaged by construction or by flooding subsequent to construction of the reservoir . The focus of the reconnaissance during the period mentioned above was in area 86 located about 4 miles northwest of Sonoraville, Georgia. Area 86 is one of 13 proposed reservoirs in the Pine Log Tributary Watershed area that may affect archaeological and historical resources in Gordon, Bartow, and Cherokee counties. The land encompassed by area 86 is presently pasture with scattered timber. Located in the northern part of the site are 4 ponds and one large marshy area. In addition, throughout the site a r e a number of wash areas formed by erosion. It was in these eroded areas that the appearance of archaeological resources seemed most probable. To the northwest of area 86 are a series of housing projects made up primarily of "A- frame" homes.
