Abstract

The Archeological Survey of Cobb County is a unit of the county government under the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, and is located in the County Engineer's office. In Fulton County the Archeological Survey is located in the-Fulton County Department of Planning and operates under an annual budget from the Fulton County Commission. The Survey also serves Gwinnett County, Forsyth County, the Atlanta Regional Commission, MARTA and the Atlanta City School System.

The goal of the Archeological Survey is to identify and effect preservation of the largest number of archeological and/or historic sites within the areas named above. Excavation is considered to be a last resort when no other method is available to conserve the data and materials contained in a site which is scheduled for destruction. Even then, only the area to be immediately affected is investigated. Research in such areas is undertaken to extract a maximum of knowledge from the site, including all available ethno-historical resources, environmental factors (both past and present), and a complete sampling of materials for analysis in every field which will yield data by a multidiscipline approach.
