Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive cultural resources survey of the GR-3 alternative location of Oglethorpe Power Corporation's proposed combustion turbine power facility in Madison County, Georgia. The survey and testing program was carried out from 10 August to 16 September 1988. One hundred percent of the 200 ha project area was surveyed. Twenty-seven archeological sites and 10 artifact occurrences, dating from the Transitional Paleoindian/Early Archaic to the Historic period, were recorded. Research interests centered on a cluster of small, limited activity sites dating to the Transitional Paleoindian/Early Archaic period and the total absence of any ceramic period permanent habitation sites. Two nineteenth century cemeteries found by this survey are recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Neither of the two sites recommended for the NRHP are located in potential impact areas, and therefore do not require data recommendations.
