Abstract

From October 8 through 13, 1989, Robert S. Webb, Beth Gantt and Sterling Howard conducted an intensive coverage cultural resources survey of the proposed Clermont-Murrayville transmission line corridor and substation site in Hall County, Georgia. The corridor is 10.5 kilometers (6-5 miles) long, while the substation site covers 4.7 hectares (11.7 acres). The survey was conducted for Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) under NEPA, in compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470) as amended. A review of the state site files, structure files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed no previously recorded cultural resources within the survey area. A review of historic maps and aerial photographs revealed 2 pre-1944 structures (maps) and 3 "structural complex" signatures (aerials) on or near the proposed corridor. Surface survey and shovel testing resulted in the discovery of 1 prehistoric site (unidentifiable lithic scatter) and 8 isolated finds. The pre-1944 structures are no longer present. Since all of these resources have been heavily disturbed by agriculture, silviculture, Georgia Power Company (GPC) transmission line impacts and heavy erosion, cultural clearance is recommended.
