Abstract

On and September 7 and 8, 2006 Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the West Point interchange addendum project area, Project CSNHS-0008-00 (232), Troup County. The proposed project was field surveyed for archaeological resources in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto. The survey boundary and methodology were established using the GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines. These guidelines were established as a result of past interaction with the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and his staff and were agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration (FHW A) and the SHPO.

The proposed project consists of a122 meters (400 ft) wide corridor centered on the existing Webb Road. The corridor extends from I-85 east 854 meters (2800 ft) to Old Gabbettville Road. There is also a 76 meters (250ft) by 167 meters (550ft) area south of Webb Road and immediately east of the 1-85 corridor that is part of the project area. The project area also includes a 91.5 meters (300 ft) wide corridor, located immediately east of the I-85 right-of-way, that extends from the Webb Road corridor north 1,342 meters ( 4400 ft). A transmission line owned by the Georgia Power Company is also within this 91.5 meters (300ft) wide corridor (Figure 1).

The project area was conceived and surveyed in anticipation of the possible widening of Webb Road and the creation of an access road along the east side of I-85. However, the present plan only calls for the lowering of the grade of Webb Road from I-85 eastward for a distance of 244 meters (800 ft). The lowering of the grade will be gradual, beginning at zero meters/feet, 244 meters (880 ft) east of 1-85, and ending at a grade of2.3 meters (7.5 ft) at the 1-85 corridor.
