Abstract

The period from June 14, 1972 until July 21, 1972 was spent excavating several sites located at the Lapham-Patterson House located in Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia under the auspices of the Georgia Historical Commission. This excavation had as its sole objective the determination of the location of two outbuildings located on the rear portion of the Lapham-Patterson Property. One of these buildings was the stable and the other one was the Caretaker's House. These buildings were constructed in about 1885 at the time the main house was built. All of these buildings were built by Mr. Charles W. Lapham, a Chicago shoe manufacturer who had developed ill health as a result of the Chicago Fire of 1871. He sought to regain his health in the resinous atmosphere of Thomas County. The main house was built as his winter residence. He owned the property until 1894, at which time the Patterson family bought the property.
